The Experience

Interns complete a Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) training program while engaging in low-stress team-teaching experiences in the Munakata public school system.

The training program includes:

  • training sessions on all program lesson plans and teaching techniques;

  • weekly TEFL seminars conducted by a TEFL university professor; and

  • a 120-hour TEFL Certificate issued subsequent to the above training and focused on the teaching experience in schools.

The teaching experience is fun and rewarding. While in elementary and junior high schools, teams of 5-10 interns work together to present lessons to groups of Japanese students.  Interns also work one-on-one to guide Japanese students through English conversation skill-building activities. Classes are on weekdays during normal school hours.

Interns may even choose to learn and/or improve Japanese language skills with local university tutors.
